Today on the road I got to stop by a small little family style restaurant in Folkston, Georgia. The Okefenokee Restaurant is truly one of those places that doesn’t pretend to be any more than exactly what it is. Good, quality food at a reasonable price.
So often today ‘family style’ buffets and ‘country cooking’ have become synonymous with a bunch of folksy fake art, dusty knock off farm implements and fake memorabilia plastered hither, thither and yon with a secondary focus on the food which is more often sold straight from cans, reheated and then shoveled into trays and passed off as cooking.
It is nice to see a place that gets it. It’s not much at all to look at. A low and aged cream colored facade backed up against a small south Georgia highway. Don’t let it fool you, inside there is a host of wonderfully cooked vegetables and meats and surprisingly, even a good salad bar. If you’re ever down that way, stop in. For less than the price of some super sized fast food garbage you can eat as much as you want and walk away satisfied and happy. And you’ll be reminded what home style cooking really is.
